About: “Lacrosse - the fastest game on two feet.” The oldest-known athletic game played in North America, was originally not a sport. It was called “baggataway” by Native Americans, and originated as a ceremonial religious rite, and was played by Native Americans throughout Canada and Northeastern U.S. Intertribal games were played for many different reasons, including to settle disputes and train young warriors for battle. European settlers gave the game the name it is known by today. One of the fastest growing sports in the U.S., it is characterized by speed, skill, complexity and nuance.
Lacrosse in Hampton Roads: Lacrosse is played in Hampton Roads through a widespread youth league in age groups beginning at U10 (under 10) up through high- school level (ages 15-18). The mission of HRLAX is to encourage, foster and promote the growth of lacrosse throughout Hampton Roads. HRLAX sponsors league play in the Spring season, with teams throughout Virginia Beach, Norfolk, Suffolk, Newport News and the Outer Banks.
Lacrosse at FC: The FC-based men’s and women’s club teams have participated in HRLAX league play for more than seven years. Last year, the FC men’s club played other club teams from Maury, Kellam, Princess Anne, Kempsville, and Cox High Schools, as well as a composite team from the Peninsula. Games are also scheduled with Catholic HS and Norfolk Collegiate. In academic year 2005-06, the FC Club was officially recognized as an FC Club activity, thanks to the sponsorship of FC Faculty Member Adam Roth, Student Activities Coordinator Hollie Godfrey and Men's Coach Tom Lucas. This was a huge step for lacrosse at First Colonial
Last year was saw the first year of a First Colonial women's club team. Previously a composite FC/Cox women’s club team competed against other women’s area club teams. It is hoped that even more club teams will be formed this year in Chesapeake and other Virginia Beach Schools following the lead of First Colonial and Cox High Schools.
