French I, German I, and Spanish I are the first-year modern language courses of a five-year sequence. They are recommended for the college-bound as well as for career-minded students for whom the knowledge of a foreign language is a valuable asset. In the first-year courses, students begin sequential development of the skills needed to understand and speak the foreign language. Language laboratory sessions may assist in the development of these skills. Reading consists primarily of elements of the language which the students have learned to understand and speak. Writing is for expression and reinforcement. Students are also introduced to the culture of the countries where the language is spoken. Culture is an integral part of all communicative efforts.

French II, German II, and Spanish II are the second-year modern language courses of a five-year sequence. The ability to understand and speak the foreign language is further developed through the introduction of additional vocabulary and grammar. Sessions in the language laboratory may assist in refining and establishing control of the language. The amount of reading for comprehension is increased. Writing for expression and reinforcement is continued. Students gain additional insights into the culture of the countries where the language is spoken, and culture continues to be an integral part of all communicative efforts.

French III, German III, and Spanish III are the third-year modern language courses of a five-year sequence. Students continue to develop competency in the skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing through extensive creation and practice. Increasingly, the foreign language is used for meaningful communication. The culture of the countries where the language is spoken continues to be stressed as an integral part of all communicative efforts.

French IV, German IV, and Spanish IV are the fourth-year modern language courses recommended for students interested in developing increased proficiency in the foreign language. The development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills continues through questions and discussion. The foreign language continues to be the vehicle for meaningful communication. Pertinent culture, grammar, and syntax are presented and applied in context.

French V, German V, and Spanish V complete the fifth-year modern language sequence. These courses are recommended for students interested in becoming increasingly proficient in the ability to understand, speak, read, and write the foreign language. Students will employ their communicative skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing in an appropriate variety of culturally and linguistically sophisticated formats.
LATIN I: BEGINNING LATIN (FL 5310)

Latin I is recommended for college-bound and career-minded students and those desiring a better understanding of English. In this beginning course, students are introduced to the Latin language as well as to the culture and institutions of the Romans. Competency in reading and understanding the language is developed through the structured presentation of pronunciation, grammar, and vocabulary. Students read stories about Roman life, history, mythology, and literature. They also develop an appreciation of the Roman contributions to Western civilization and the Latin influence on the development of the English language.
LATIN II: SECOND-YEAR LATIN (FL 5320)

Prerequisite: Latin I
In Latin II students continue to expand their control of the reading, verbal, and grammar skills developed in Latin I. Additional grammatical structures and vocabulary enable students to read a greater variety of stories with comprehension. English word derivation, Roman mythology, history, and culture continue to be emphasized.
LATIN III: THIRD-YEAR LATIN (FL 5330)

In Latin III students continue to develop their competency in reading, verbal, and grammar skills through the study of advanced grammatical structures and additional vocabulary. Students increase their historical and cultural knowledge of the Romans through extensive readings in authentic Latin literary selections. Their study of English derivatives continues with an emphasis on more complex words and word families.
LATIN IV: FOURTH-YEAR LATIN (FL 5340)

Prerequisite: Latin III
In Latin IV students employ the language skills acquired during previous courses. Students study Vergil, the Augustan Age, the history, the mythology, and other elements pertinent to the Aeneid. An increasingly sophisticated understanding of English derivatives is acquired through the analysis of Latin roots, prefixes, and suffixes.
LATIN V: FIFTH-YEAR LATIN (FL 5350)

Prerequisite: Latin IV
In Latin V students explore various literary styles and become acquainted with several Latin authors through a survey of Latin literature, a review of major grammatical forms, and continued study of English derivatives.
