Legal Studies Academy Admission Policy

Eligibility
The First Colonial High School Legal Studies Academy opened in the fall of 2002 with 100 ninth graders. Students are selected through an application process, which is open to any current eighth-grade student citywide with a strong interest in legal studies. The Academy enrolls one hundred freshmen at the start of each subsequent school year.

Admissions Policy
Students will be selected on the basis of their interest in and aptitude for legal studies, their school records, teacher recommendations, counselor recommendation, and parent recommendation sheets. In addition, students will submit a student-interest application essay .

Selection Committee
A selection committee of administrators, teachers and counselors will review the applications and student data of all qualified candidates. In making their selections, committee members will consider the following criteria:

  • Counselor recommendation
  • Teacher recommendations
  • Parent recommendation
  • Achievement data
  • Student essay

Students will be ranked and the top scorers will be recommended for admission to the First Colonial High School Legal Studies Academy. Students will be notified of their acceptance by the third week in April. The Legal Studies Academy will maintain a waiting list of students in the event that a student who is offered a position chooses not to accept.

Application Deadline
Applications for the Legal Studies Academy are due to the Academy Coordinator at First Colonial High School, by February 4th.
